Poem (March 9 post)

“I See a Thousand Heroes”

I see a thousand heroes

How many died scared?

How many died wondering if anyone cared?

I see a thousand heroes

After the storm the fought

After the price they paid

After the peace they earned

Here lie a thousand heroes

How many fathers left their child with a goodbye?

How many left a bride with the promise “I will come back to you, I will try”?

Brides sat alone at home

Swimming in fear and tears

Waiting for their soldier to return

I see a thousand heroes

They fought for peace

With all they had

Now they rest in peace

Here lie a thousand heroes

They wait for the world to come

As they rest here in eternity

They wait for us to see

As they rest after duty

They wait for the nation in whose name they fought

I see a thousand heroes

With selflessness beyond their knowledge

They stood tall

They crouched low

They rest still

Here lie a thousand heroes

How brave they were

In the trench

At the throttle

On the trigger

Screaming away the sweat and tears

I see a thousand heroes

Their hearts beat true

Now as much as then

Acknowledged by few

Here lie a thousand heroes

Finally they rest together

Under the banner of freedom

Their last and only request, fulfilled

I am so proud to salute a thousand heroes.
